A large-scale salmon farming company in Japan required a combination of automated and manual valves for its seawater treatment system. Because the project involved seawater, metallic and thermoplastic piping, and different control requirements, using the same valve material and configuration throughout the system was not the most practical solution.
For this project, SLVCN supplied Duplex 2205 pneumatic wafer butterfly valves, CPVC pneumatic butterfly valves, manual wafer butterfly valves, control valves and globe valves. Each valve was selected according to the piping material, operating duty and control requirements of the relevant section.
For selected metallic process lines, Duplex 2205 pneumatic butterfly valves were supplied, with both the valve body and disc manufactured from Duplex 2205 stainless steel. Seawater presents additional material-selection challenges because of its chloride content, so the suitability of the valve body, disc, stem, seat and other wetted components needs to be considered against the actual water chemistry, pressure and temperature. For the specified project conditions, Duplex 2205 provided a combination of mechanical strength and improved resistance to chloride-related corrosion.
The system also incorporated CPVC pneumatic butterfly valves in selected thermoplastic piping sections. CPVC provides a lightweight, corrosion-resistant option where compatibility with plastic piping and the operating conditions of the water-treatment system is required.
Manual wafer butterfly valves were supplied for selected local isolation duties, while control valves and globe valves were used for other regulating and isolation functions. The project therefore used different valve materials and operating methods according to the actual requirements of each part of the system rather than applying one valve design throughout.
The Duplex 2205 pneumatic wafer butterfly valves were supplied as complete automated assemblies rather than as bare valves.
Each package combined the valve with a pneumatic actuator and the required accessories, including limit switch boxes, solenoid valves and air filter regulators. The solenoid valve controls the actuator air path for remote opening and closing, the limit switch box provides valve-position feedback, and the air filter regulator helps provide clean compressed air at the required pressure.
Supplying the valve, actuator and accessories as one package also allows actuator sizing, valve torque and accessory configuration to be reviewed together before installation. This is particularly useful in water-treatment systems where multiple automated valves need to operate reliably as part of the same control system.
The project photographs show the supplied valves installed throughout the customer's water-treatment equipment together with pumps, instrumentation, membrane vessels and associated piping.
The completed installation demonstrates how pneumatic butterfly valves, CPVC butterfly valves, manual butterfly valves and other industrial valves can perform different functions within the same seawater treatment system.
For large-scale aquaculture applications such as salmon farming, valve selection needs to consider more than valve size and connection type. Material compatibility, piping material, automation requirements and the actual duty of each process line all influence the final valve configuration.
SLVCN supplies a wide range of butterfly valves, including pneumatic butterfly valves, electric butterfly valves and manual butterfly valves. Common connection types include wafer, lug and flanged butterfly valves. Valve materials, sizes, pressure ratings, seat materials, applicable standards and actuator configurations can be selected according to the actual operating conditions and project requirements.
